White House Lies

White House Gun Lies

You’ve heard this shocking “fact” before — on TV and radio, in newspapers, on the Internet and from the highest politicians in the land: 90 percent of the weapons used to commit crimes in Mexico come from the United States.

– Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said it to reporters on a flight to Mexico City.

– CBS newsman Bob Schieffer referred to it while interviewing President Obama.

– California Sen. Dianne Feinstein said at a Senate hearing: “It is unacceptable to have 90 percent of the guns that are picked up in Mexico and used to shoot judges, police officers and mayors … come from the United States.”

– William Hoover, assistant director for field operations at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, testified in the House of Representatives that “there is more than enough evidence to indicate that over 90 percent of the firearms that have either been recovered in, or interdicted in transport to Mexico, originated from various sources within the United States.”

There’s just one problem with the 90 percent “statistic” and it’s a big one:

It’s just not true.

In fact, it’s not even close. The fact is, only 17 percent of guns found at Mexican crime scenes have been traced to the U.S.

What’s true, an ATF spokeswoman told FOXNews.com, in a clarification of the statistic used by her own agency’s assistant director, “is that over 90 percent of the traced firearms originate from the U.S.”

But a large percentage of the guns recovered in Mexico do not get sent back to the U.S. for tracing, because it is obvious from their markings that they do not come from the U.S.

“Not every weapon seized in Mexico has a serial number on it that would make it traceable, and the U.S. effort to trace weapons really only extends to weapons that have been in the U.S. market,” Matt Allen, special agent of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), told FOX News.

  1. Goddammit this site is sad… written with the technical and artistic skill of an impaired infant. I hate the obama administration as much as anyone, but this is just pathetic… get lives

    The real facts.

17% of these weapons were manufactured in the United States (i.e. Smith and Wesson, Winchester, Colt, etc.) and the rest were foreign (Kalashnikov, Israel Military Industries, H&K, etc.)

What’s missing is this : no matter where the guns were manufactured, 90% of the guns used for crime in Mexico changed hands in the United States and moved down.

Where else would they come from? I’m sure Guatemala has a great arms manufacturer that could produce millions of firearms.

  4. Please back up your statement. You can’t say 17% manufactured, and then 90% changed hands in the U.S. without some proof to back it up.

Not all boats leaving foreign countries end up in the U.S.

  5. Everyone is missing the point. The guns aren’t the problem, the dumb mexicans using them are. A gun by itself is useless, its a tool like anything else.

More swimming pools kills kids every year than guns – WAY more. But I never hear a liberal talk about a ban on pools!

  6. You all seem to be missing the point, it is not the gun or the dealers using them, it is the idiots in this country buying the drugs. Either make them legal or come down hard on the user, either will end the drug violence

Idiots like you will always find a way to blame the U.S. The problem in Mexico is Mexico’s fault alone. When it spills into our country it becomes our problem. We have the ability to shut down our border and it needs to be done, NOW!!!

  8. The entire problem could be fixed if THE BORDER IS SEALED. Leave no way for drugs and illegals to cross. After that IT WON”T MATTER if the Mexicans shoot each other. Grow up, Mexico is a nation. We can’t be held responsible for their lack of government.
